Gemeinschaft vs Gesellschaft

: a spontaneously arising organic social relationship characterized by strong reciprocal bonds of sentiment and kinship within a common tradition; also : a community or society characterized by this relationship
vs.
: a rationally developed mechanistic type of social relationship characterized by impersonally contracted associations between persons; also : a community or society characterized by this relationship

Thank you for introducing me to these terms. There are no equivalents in English. I had acquaintance with the latter term through GmbH when stationed in Germany.

The former is non-hierarchical, based on horizontal interactions that build community, while the latter is hierarchical, based in vertical control of interactions that mold society.

The (un)Affordable Care Act promotes the latter and disencentivizes the former, and requires a cookie-cutter approach that suppresses presonalization. If universal healthcare sought, the only way to it is through a single-payer system that does not discriminate between providers. Even in its title, the ACA does not promote universal healthcare.

With the devolution of society concomitant with the contraction of resources (including energy) it is imperative to rebuild community, but the redoubling of efforts to maintain growth (a term used advisedly in oncology) will stifle that imperative.

One parameter to consider in the devolution of medical practice is the use of semiconductors, particularly the very large array circuits. They arrived in the scene well after the first heart transplant, the first hip replacement, and even the first man on the moon. Their extreme resource intensiveness and extensive critical dependencies will make them untenable on the downslope of Hubbert's curve. But the healthcare system has metamorphosed so far into its dependency on this technology that such a idea is beyond imagination - for now. That will make the regression so much more painful and chaotic when it is forced upon us.

The mortar and pestle is still the symbol of pharmacy, although most pharmacists and today's pharmacy graduates have never used one. In bygone times their predecessors were quite competent in going into the woods and gathering plants from which they extracted useful medicinals. Yet in recent decades, over a quarter of all new pharmaceuticals hitting the market had their inspiration in compounds found in nature. The pharmaceutical industry also faces the torture of contraction.
